Welcome to Health Section Articles! | Homeopathy and your baby or toddler
By: Mike Andrews
I have been treating babies and toddlers for many years and built up much experience in this area. Homeopathy is without side-effects and so therefore many parents choice for their children. It can be used to treat a wide range of conditions such as asthma, eczema, colic, sleep problems and can be an alternative to steroid creams and antibiotics.
What will I need to know when treating your baby/toddler?
- part of the consultation and subsequent analysis is based on observing your child - how they are with you and in the clinic environment
- whether they are a hot or cold child
- if they perspire, and if so where and when
- depending on age: feeding history, food likes and dislikes, thirst
- I will also inquire about family medical history, major health problems of parents and grandparents if known
- the history of the pregnancy and birth - any particular food cravings, illnesses or emotional events
- what the stools are like; developmental milestones; dentition; any skin problems; immunization history; constitution of the child; sleep habits, position etc; mood, behavior and temperament.
How long will it take?
Babies/toddlers with an acute condition usually respond rapidly to homeopathic treatment.
More deep seated conditions, such as asthma and eczema, will take longer. It is recommended that you commit to a course of treatment to benefit fully from what homeopathy has to offer. Once you have registered your child with me and attended an initial consultation, I am then able to prescribe for acute illnesses that your child has and to offer regular treatment to maximize your child's health potential. An individual treatment plan will be discussed at the first consultation and goals set for the treatment period.
Why are only a few pills given?
The aim of homeopathic treatment is to stimulate the bodies own self healing powers. The few doses of the remedy, or single powdered dose, or single powdered dose could be compared in effect to that of dropping a pebble into a pond, the ripples continue long after the initial action. This is obviously different to conventional medicine where repeated doses are given to suppress symptoms, rather than the homeopathic approach which seeks to treat the causative factors. Antibiotics kill bacteria, homeopathy treats the 'soil' on which the bacteria grow so that they can no longer live there.
